Raising a Glass to Mindful Drinking: The Rise of Zero-Sugar and Alcohol-Free Choices

The way we drink is changing. More consumers are rethinking what goes into their glass: less sugar, less alcohol, and more drinks that fit a balanced lifestyle without giving up on taste. At New Port Duty Free, we’re following this shift closely and growing our range to match.

Moderation Goes Mainstream

What started as a niche movement is now firmly mainstream. No- and low-alcohol volumes grew 13% in 2024 across the world’s top 10 markets for the category, and 61 million people started drinking no-alcohol options between 2022 and 2024, according to IWSR. IWSR also forecasts the volume of no-alcohol beer, wine, RTDs and spirits to grow by 36% between 2024 and 2029.

This isn’t limited to one generation. IWSR notes that moderation now cuts across all age groups, regions and demographics, and is no longer just a trend among younger drinkers. Many of these consumers aren’t giving up alcohol altogether. They’re choosing when to drink and when to reach for an alcohol-free option instead.

Less Sugar, More Awareness

Sugar is under the same spotlight, especially here in Singapore. Since the Nutri-Grade labels were introduced, household sugar intake from pre-packaged drinks has fallen by 18%, and manufacturers have reformulated products to cut overall sugar content by 21%. Consumers are reading labels more carefully and choosing lighter options, and brands are responding.

For New Port Duty Free, the lesson is clear: today’s consumers want choice. They want drinks that suit the occasion, whether that’s a celebration, a relaxed evening or a working day.

Taste Still Comes First

Alcohol-free drinks no longer have to be a compromise. While health and cutting back on alcohol remain the main reasons people choose no/low drinks, taste, availability and brand awareness have all become more important since 2022. In short, people will choose alcohol-free, but only if it tastes as good as the real thing.

That’s why New Port Duty Free focuses on alcohol-free options from established brands with real brewing and winemaking heritage.
